The Steps to Unity
Philippians 2:1-30
I. Jesus Christ:
The traits of His life in us.
2:1-4
1. The trait of consolation. (vs. 1)
2. The trait of love. (vs. 1)
3. The trait of fellowship in the spirit. (vs. 1)
4. The trait of compassion. (vs. 1)
5. The trait of concern for others joy. (vs. 2)
6. The trait of humility or lowliness of mind. (vs. 3)
7. The trait of controlling self-interest or concentration upon oneself.
(vs. 4)
II. Humbling One's self
2:5-11
1. Christ is the supreme example. (vs. 5)
2. Christ is the very nature of God. (vs. 6)
3. Christ emptied Himself and became a man. (vs. 7)
4. Christ humbled Himself to the point of utter humiliation. To the very
point of death. (vs. 8)
5. Christ is rewarded; highly exalted by God. (Vs. 9-11)
a. Given a name above every name.
b. Given supreme power and authority.
c. Given supreme worship as Lord.
III. Working out one's own salvation or deliverance.
2:12-18
1st work: To work out one's own salvation (deliverance) with fear and
trembling. (vs. 12)
2nd work: To work at obedience: to work out the stirring of God within your
heart. (vs. 13)
3rd work: To work at not murmuring. (vs. 14)
4th work: To work at being pure. (vs. 15)
a. Blameless
b. Harmless, sincere
c. Without rebuke
5th work: To work at witnessing. (vs. 16)
6th work: To work at following the example of sacrificial labor.
(Vs. 17-18)
IV. Paul ends this chapter telling about two young men who through
Attitude and service brought him joy.
2:19-30
1. The example of Timothy. (Vs. 19-24)
a. A young man who willingly served in second place.
(vs. 19)
b. He had a kindred, brotherly spirit in caring for others.
(vs. 20)
c. He was willing to deny himself, to be obsessed with the things of Christ. (vs. 21)
d. He was willing to be a son, a disciple. (Vs. 22-24)
2. The example of Epaphroditus - a man who was not a quitter nor a
coward. (Vs. 25-30)
a. He did not quit nor forsake his brother. (vs. 25)
b. He did not quit nor forsake the church. (vs. 26)
c. He did not quit nor forsake God. (vs. 27)
d. He was dedicated to finishing the job no matter the cost.
